About canoonet

The canoonet online language services are provided thanks to the LanguageTools of the Canoo Engineering AG (since Dec 2018 IMTF SA). The services are the result of the collaboration of several years between associates of the University of Basel, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the IDSIA Lugano and the Canoo Engineering AG (now IMTF).

The Canoo Morphological Dictionary is based on several electronic and traditional word lists which were, and still are, complemented by other sources. Our team of lexicographers led by Dr. Stephan Bopp has entered each word individually into the database, if necessary after having consulted other word lists and web browsers. The dictionary database includes approximately 250.000 entries which correspond to more than 3 million word forms.

The spelling information is based on the official spelling rules (2006/2017) and the corresponding word list. Where the information given by the official rules and the word list is insufficient, we propose solutions that are both in accordance with other spelling guides (e.g. Wahrig, Duden) and as analogous as possible to the official rules .

The information on related terms is provided by the University of Tübingen (project GermaNet).

The grammar sections were written by Stephan Bopp, a linguist who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Zurich. They are based on traditional grammars (e.g. Duden, Helbig/Buscha, Fleischer/Barz, Grammis) as well as on various publications on specific grammatical issues. This purely descriptive grammar is a clear and comprehensive online representation of German grammar intended for students of the Mittelstufe (comparable to middle school or junior high school) and higher, teachers, advanced learners of German and, in general, for all those who are interested in the German language.

The canoonet grammar is well-structured, consistent, and intelligible, commented Prof. Dr. Annelies Häcki-Buhofer, professor at the Department of German Linguistics of the University of Basel (not involved in the development of canoonet) and chairwoman of the Swiss Linguistics Society (SSG/SSL). It is a valuable contribution for developing analytical language skills. Both adults and students from 4th grade onwards will profit from this resource. In contrast to many printed grammars, canoonet is easy to use and easy to understand. Students and casual users will like its interactive search function, cross-links, and glossary of linguistic terms. Language teachers will like its comprehensiveness and unique integration with large dictionaries.
